SUMMARY:

This dissertation aimed to analyze the repercussions of the changes in urban-rural relations on the eating of farming families in Guapimirim, located in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, from the interlocutors' perception regarding the feeding of their families. We used the authors Carneiro (1998), Wanderley (2009), and Rua (2005; 2019) to argue for the maintenance of the notion of rural, even if transformed and to break dichotomies and opposition's pairs. We highlighted the most relevant points of flow intensifications between urban and rural in the Rio de Janeiro state and the municipality's main characteristics for contextualization. The research was based on the socio-anthropological approach to food (CANESQUI and DIEZ GARCIA, 2005; MACIEL, 2005; MINTZ, 2001; POULAIN, 2006) and had a qualitative character. We used observation and semi-structured interviews with nine family groups that participate in the municipality's Organic and Agroecological Fair to obtain field data. The main conclusions point to a food composed of items with varied origins, either from their production or purchased at the fair and markets, including fresh, locally processed, and industrialized food. There was no trend toward food homogenization based on industrialized products. Instead, it incorporated some of these items into daily household consumption based on practicality, cost, pleasure, and health. The intensification of flows between urban and rural, especially with the highway construction through Guapimirim, proved to be a relevant vector in disseminating goods to areas with less access previously. However, the most significant repercussions of this process were the improvement of access to mainly public health services and the greater possibility of interactions and construction of networks that promote discussions and reflections on food and healthy eating.
