SUMMARY:

Academic researches dedicated to understanding rural youth tend to focus on topics such as permanence, work and behavior, among others. This research proposes an analysis less addressed in studies on rural youth: Consumption and Material Culture. The fieldwork was São Pedro da Serra district, in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. From interviews with young people living in this territory, we identified four categories, related to consumption and material culture, that matter to them and cross their daily lives: clothing, mobiles, transportation and waste. The interviews also revealed particularities in the way that these rural youth deal with the dilemma of “leave or stay” and how they “dribble”, mainly through internet shopping, the limitations imposed by living far from urban centers, with greater availability of markets. Although it is not possible, within the limits of this research, to reach broad conclusions, we hope to contribute to the construction, in rural studies, of an interest in daily practices of acquiring, exchanging and handling of things.
