This research project aims to investigate, analyze, and understand the interfaces established between political and economic action in the strategies of distribution of organic and agroecological foods promoted by organizations of social movements in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Through a comparative study of the experiences carried out by Movimenta Caxias and the Small Farmers Movement (in Portuguese, Movimento dos Pequenos Agricultores-MPA), we intend to analyze the dynamics of collective action  that emerge through these initiatives, taking into account the people, resources and narratives that they mobilize. We intend, in addition, to investigate the connections established between these two streams of collective actions through the Collective Terra, an association of agroecological producers from the Baixada Fluminense. Starting from a historical analysis of the connections established between food producers and consumers in peripherical neighborhoods in this region, we aim to contribute to the debates on alternative agrifood networks, collective action and social movements, taking into account a broader theoretical framework of interactions established between civil society, State and markets, and to propose possible paths for these networks in a context of advancing neoliberalism and state and para-state authoritarianism. Between April and July 2020, Movimenta Caxias distributed food and hygiene products to more than 8.000 people in 14 municipalities in the state. The actions were made possible through various partnerships, with emphasis on the contract signed with Instituto Unibanco, which made available approximately R$ 5 million reais. In turn, the MPA is building a specific arrangement involving the purchase and donation of food within the Mutirões Contra a Fome campaign, organized in response to the pandemic, and which is distributing agro-ecological food products in at least seven favelas in the city of Rio de Janeiro. We used a set of methods to cover the different dimensions of this analysis and the diversity of actors involved: participant observation, semi-structured interviews and participatory action research. Our hypothesis is that, caused by the unprecedented context of the coronavirus pandemic, these organizations diversified their repertories of action, innovating in food purchase and donation arrangements inspired by a concept of solidarity as a political action. Taking food as the point of connection, they articulate production and consumption networks that contribute to the popularization of organic and agroecological foods in peripheral territories.
