The financialization of iron mining and its impacts in Brazil

The research will seek to verify if the process of financialization of iron ore mining has been completed and what are the implications of this for the extraction of iron ore in Brazil. It will seek to relate neoliberal reforms to the Brazilian Mineral System, including the privatization of Vale do Rio Doce, and the development of various forms of connection between the financial market and the Brazilian iron ore business. Among these forms will be highlighted the evolution of the direct participation of financial institutions in mining companies and the strengthening of the prevalence of the logic of shareholder value and the end of the producer price regime that led to the development of futures and derivatives markets. with an impact on the formation of iron ore prices. Finally, from the perspective of Political Ecology, the link between the financialization of iron mining and its consequences for the expansion of mineral extraction in Brazil will be investigated. as well as for the increase of conflicts and disasters
