Belo Sun, Mineral sector, Financialization, Volta Grande do Xingu

The global extractive industry finds itself in current days in a moment of competition for possession and control of natural resources that has been intensifying more and more before the growing finitude of mineral resources and the ongoing crises of the surplus capital on planetary scale. It is noticed that this phenomena situates de commodity boom in the beggining of the 2000’s and the 2008 financial crises as its last time frame, from which the role played by financial investments and institutions become central motives that boost the global rush for natural resources, especially in primary-export orientated economies. The present thesis approaches the transformations occasioned in the mineral sector by the high finances, from the minerals commodity financialization and by a specific sectorial corporative culture that lifts and consolidates a range of mineral junior companies throught financial markets, mainly the ones linked to international stock exchanges. This way, the object of this research was to undress the means of performance and organization of a junior company in Brazil, known as Belo Sun Mining, present in the brazilian Amazon throught means of mineral research and exploration concessions. We justify the development of this paper in the growing presence of this business category in the interests held for brazilian mineral reserves, bringing along their own features, still little explored by national literature. In order to enable this research, we choose a methodological approach, at first, of qualitative analyses in contents and data from documents made by Belo Sun, such as development plans for the mineral project and financial fillings and reports headed to investing and managing body of the compan; secondly, of literature review that approaches the ideas of extractivism, neoextractivism and global land rush, conceptually problematizing the current land rush and its control and appropriation dimensions as featured traces of the mineral sector. As we understand juniors as essencially financialized companies, we sought to question the own manner that extractive activities begin to operate beyond mineral production itself, to the point of verifying to be tools that enable the profit and revenue persue by these companies throught merely speculative e financial means.
