SUMMARY:

This research is part of the context of the socio-environmental conflicts in Sepetiba Bay. The guiding question of this study is to understand how traditional populations have resisted the new uses given by large enterprises to their territories, since the use of natural resources by these enterprises makes the way of life of these populations unfeasible. In this context, conflicts and resistance to the operation of these enterprises are common. In this way, we seek to understand how the populations of Ilha da Madeira/Itaguaí-RJ and Reta João XXIII in the neighborhood of Santa Cruz (RJ) have been organizing themselves to resist the port, steel and industrial uses that were imposed on their territories. As well as understanding the faces of the Brazilian State that are at stake in the conflicts and resistance between the populations affected by large enterprises and the companies installed in their territories.
