SUMMARY:

Nature Conservation Units have been described as the main strategy for biodiversity conservation in Brazil, where environmental protection is established in the Constitution of Federative Republic as a right "for all" and an "asset for common use" of the current population and future generations. In turn, the Food Security is related to strategies for realizing the right "of all" to regular and permanent access to quality food in sufficient quantity, without compromising access to other needs, such as an ecologically balanced environment, essential to a healthy quality of life. While the achievement of food security demands intersectoral actions to guarantee access to land, territory, and resources, participation and social control over natural resources, the Conservation Units of the Extractive Reserve type (Resex), due to their structuring characteristics, present themselves as the institutionalization of a model for the use of land and natural resources that promotes the preservation of biodiversity from the management, permanence, and active participation of the artisanal extractive communities that historically integrate the territories. In these terms, this research is situated at the interface of the themes of biodiversity conservation and food security, and its objective is to understand if and how the Marine Extractive Reserve can be understood as spaces where the defense of territory by local communities makes the food security objectives and practices possible to been incorporated and in what ways the notion of commons instituting practices participate in this connection. The Marine Extractive Reserve of Canavieiras (BA) was the site of the field research, and the procedures used to analyze these relationships were the application of a survey on food insecurity in the fishing communities, supported by the Brazilian Scale of Food Insecurity, the monitoring of meetings of the Deliberative Council between 2020 and 2022, and meetings with fishing leaders in 2022.
