SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the discursive disputes around the Food Guide for the Brazilian Population, published in 2014, in order to investigate the discursive practices and strategies mobilized by important spokespersons considered antagonists in this dispute. It starts from the premise that these disputes are developed in search of hegemony in the field of promoting adequate and healthy food diet and that discourse is an important instrument of political action. As more efforts are made to define and implement the promotion of an adequate and healthy food diet, the conflict between organized civil society and food industry representatives is accentuated. Despite the fact that corporate actions aimed at mastering the debate on food are increasingly robust and multifaceted, there is a continuous effort by civil society agents to dispute this space of action. Based on the investigation of the practices and discursive strategies of actors such as the Associação Brasileira de Indústria de Alimentos – ABIA, Aliança pela Alimentação Adequada e Saudável and Associação Brasileira de Saúde Coletiva - Abrasco and their respective political discourses on the Food Guide, we seek to identify how the discourses are related, the problems, injustices and solutions they contain, the main elements mobilized, their discursive strategies, their nodal points and, above all, answer how the actors manage the existence of the Guide as an instrument of public action and its relationship with the role of the State in issues related to food. Therefore, the analysis will be based on the Discourse Theory of the University of Essex, based on the works of Laclau and Mouffe (1985), with rereadings of new contributions by Balsa (2017; 2020), articulated with the perspective of interpretative landmarks of Benford and Snow (1998) and Galván (2012).
