SUMMARY:

The objective of this paper is to investigate how the agribusiness sector has incorporated climate and environmental issues over the past decades. As of the 1970s, a process of global environmental awareness has been observed. In this context, the environmental issue began to receive greater prominence on the international agenda, with the Stockholm Conference in 1972 as the initial milestone. This greater attention resulted in the creation of several environmental bodies, laws, agreements, treaties, and protocols, establishing a form of environmental governance. This new perspective influenced the actions of players in the international system and national governments, generating pressure on practices that cause environmental degradation, overexploitation of natural resources, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, such as deforestation resulting from cattle raising and soy production in Brazil, for example. In view of this, some actors responsible for environmental impacts have begun to appropriate the environmental agenda, "environmentalizing" their actions. This process has focused, in recent years, on the climate problem and GHG emissions, driven by financial approaches, market instruments, ecological modernization, and the carbon metric. In this context, this research aims to analyze the process of environmentalization of Brazilian agribusiness and its appropriation of the climate agenda, having as a case study the Low Carbon Agriculture Plan (2010; 2021). To achieve this goal, the research will use as methodology the case study of the Low Carbon Agriculture Plan (ABC Plan). Besides the documental analysis, based on official documents from the Brazilian government, international organizations and non-governmental organizations, the bibliographical research will use as theoretical reference the concepts of environmentalization, ecogovernmentalism, technological modernization, agribusiness political concert, climate neoliberalization and carbon metrics.
