Hunger continues to be a source of concern for millions of individuals in the 20th century.
XXI. Historical problem and still not overcome by humanity relegates entire families to
live on the brink of catastrophe. In this dissertation, we will deepen and carry out a
bibliographic review of three important works by the great national author and also of
international relevance to address the theme: Josué de Castro.
Josué de Castro, a pioneering author on hunger in Brazil and of great worldwide prominence
his main contribution to the subject being the construction of a social theory of hunger. A
analysis of the phenomenon as an eminently social fact was revolutionary for its time and
distances the theories in vogue at the time that still, predominantly, understood hunger as
a phenomenon of natural cause.
Starting, therefore, from the writings of Josué de Castro in: Geografia da fome (1946),
Geopolitics of hunger (1957) and Six feet of earth and a coffin (1967) and using
basic concepts, we seek to understand how hunger, the object of Josué's studies,
relates to imperialism and international influences on public policies and
land management in peripheral countries, specifically Brazil.
Based on a multidisciplinary and systematic approach to hunger, we found
that the international and its dynamics are themes visited by the author throughout all his
construction. The issue of hunger as a phenomenon with explanations that go beyond borders
national and anchored in international inequalities converges the theory of Josué de Castro and
Marxist theories of imperialism going beyond the natural question and basing their
persistence in the dynamics between national states.
Colonialism and imperialism are factors directly listed by Josué as
responsible for the mechanics of hunger in the outskirts of capitalism, we will relate the
concepts addressed by the author and also seek to understand the role that the international
exercise in the reproduction of hunger. Based on the classic concepts of Josué de Castro about
hunger and performing a critical reading of his works in the light of Marxist theories of
imperialism, we will make a bibliographic review of his books and deepen the theme
international scene, notably the phenomenon of imperialism, present in his works and still
Poorly explored.
