Teia dos Povos (Peoples’ Web) is a Brazilian political alliance founded in 2012 by agrarian reform
settlers, indigenous peoples, quilombolas and traditional communities, peripheral urban collectives
and the homeless. It was born with the aim of organizing a black, indigenous and popular alliance
under the banner of the "struggle for land, territory and autonomy", and is now active in more than
twelve states across the country. The alliance in Teia dos Povos is sealed through collective work
and mutual support. In its discourse, it states that it seeks to act in a way that is uncoupled from the
state, in an active critique of the tactics and strategies of the institutional left, as well as in
opposition to the models of economic and political organization imposed by capital. In the cognitive
field, Teia dos Povos takes up an invisible legacy of interethnic articulations that marked a series of
popular revolts and insurgencies in Brazilian history in past centuries, building counter-colonial
narratives that inspire the concrete construction of alliances in the present. Although it is a novelty
in Brazil, movements with a repertoire similar to that of the People's Web have been built in Latin
America as a result of indigenous and peasant insurgencies. This research is part of the great
theoretical effort that has been made to understand the centrality that the theme of autonomy and
ethnicity has gained in our continent over the last three decades, especially in relation to the
discourses and practices of indigenous movements. Theoretically and methodologically, the
research is anchored in historical anthropology with a processualist and situational approach. Our
aim is to understand the meanings (symbolic and practical) that have been constructed by the
Peoples' Web for the themes of "ancestry", "identity", "land", "territory" and "autonomy" and what
this experience adds, with its particularities, to the construction of the Latin American autonomous
paradigm.
