SUMMARY:

The ecological crisis caused by pollution threatens the life of nature and humanity on Earth.
The intensification of the sociometabolic order mediated by capital has produced sacrifice
zones for the final disposal of millions of tons of solid waste, particularly organic waste
derived from food loss and waste. As a result, the metabolic rift has deepened, revealing an
imbalance in the exchanges between societies and their natural environments, affecting
ecosystems, common goods, and human health. In Bogotá, this crisis is manifested in the
conflict generated by the massive burial of waste in the ‘Doña Juana’ landfill, located in the
rural area of ‘Mochuelo’, in the south of the Colombian capital. For over thirty years (1988 -
present), this toxic management method has caused ecosystem degradation, public health
harm, and changes to everyday social life within the influence area of this infrastructure,
which is linked to basic sanitation services regulated by state public policies. In this context,
the affected communities have organized and mobilized to collectively demand the full
restoration of their rights to human dignity and a healthy environment. As a result,
‘Mochuelo’ has become a territory of resistance, from which an initiative for transforming
waste into resources has emerged, structured by ‘Sineambore’, a recycling association led by
women from the community. Based on the critical perspective of Political Ecology, this thesis
analyzes the community-based work of organic waste utilization within the context of this
ecological conflict caused by pollution. Primary and secondary documentary sources were
explored, quantitative data were systematized, georeferencing exercises with QGIS were
conducted, and guided walks were conducted by the association in this territory. The research
demonstrates that this community-driven alternative, focused on the production of bio-inputs
through composting, vermiculture, and biodigestion techniques, contributes to the ecological
restoration of soils, the revitalization of social fabric, and food production connected with
agroecological networks in the city. This community process, in a hopeful sense, may inspire
the structuring of sustainable, emancipatory, and democratic alternatives centered around the
care of common goods, advancing towards the social reappropriation of nature in the Global
South.
