More than a hundred riverside women had their scalps torn off while being transported on small boats, the main means of transport on Amazon rivers. The long hair of women and girls gets tangled around the shafts of unprotected engines, causing serious accidents that lead to mutilation and even death. The research will seek to carry out a socio-anthropological analysis of the scalping of riverside women in the state of Pará, reflecting on how the mutilated bodies of women victims of the “accident” during transport on boats along the Amazon rivers are perceived and given new meanings by health professionals (doctors, psychologists and social workers) and by the social world of which the victims are part. In this sense, it is proposed to address among the research questions the scope of public policies that deal particularly with scalping and, in general, the women's care network in the Amazon. Based on interviews and monitoring of women undergoing treatment, the research will seek to reconstruct and situate the diversity of experiences of social suffering resulting from the trauma of scalping, such as depersonalization and the feeling of incompleteness, anger, social stigma resulting from mutilation, as well as how to highlight feminine organization and resistance actions on a political, imaginary and everyday level.
