Land, power and territory in the expansion of the agricultural frontier: the impact of land grabbing and de-territorialization on peoples' agricultural knowledge in MATOPIBA
land grabbing; de-territorialization; MATOPIBA; agricultural knowledge; traditional peoples and communities.
MATOPIBA is a territorial delimitation that comprises part of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia and was created to serve the interests of Brazilian agribusiness and foreign capital. In this region, as a result of the increase in global investment in land in the 21st century, there has been a growth in the process of foreignization of land, which, accompanied by a series of socio-environmental violences, has led to the de-territorialization of traditional peoples and communities. Given this context, my aim - by discussing foreignization and analyzing the extent to which this process has influenced the de-territorialization of peoples and their experiences - is to understand what the implications of the process of foreignization of land are for the agricultural knowledge of traditional peoples and communities in MATOPIBA. To this end, as well as carrying out a literature review, I produced maps of the zones of tension between foreign lands and traditional territories and interviewed various leaders of traditional peoples and communities in the states of Piauí and Maranhão.
