SUMMARY:

This study seeks to understand whether and how conflicts between large transnational corporations, the State, and peasant social movements have contributed to updating the debates around the struggle for land and territory, particularly in relation to the concept of Agrarian Reform. The aim is to bring to light the debates and meanings articulated by those who are not in the hegemonic position of power in this dispute—namely, those who construct it through their daily struggles within their territories—in order to assess whether they contribute to renewing the concepts and practices associated with this theme. Moreover, this study intends to center the role of peasant women in the struggle for land, highlighting how their strategies of action and methods of mobilization have united practices of production and reproduction in the territories, which are potentially capable of generating new meanings for this struggle. As the main lens through which this process will be analyzed, a case study will be conducted on the confrontation between the Landless Rural Workers' Movement (MST) and agribusiness pulp and paper companies—particularly Suzano—in the far south of Bahia. In this region, a series of massive land occupations began in 2003, led by women members of the movement, in areas considered productive eucalyptus plantations owned by the company. Three key elements of this case contribute significantly to the thesis discussion. A shift away from the unproductive latifundium as the central object of mobilization, making room for social and environmental indicators as key determinants of the struggle; A negotiation between the State, social movement, and company resulting in an agreement for land concession; and The leading role of women in organizing and carrying out these occupations, pointing to alternative drivers of the land struggle.
