SUMMARY:

The present research aims to analyze the discourses and representations about Indigenous children and their childhoods produced by the government, international organizations, and the hegemonic media. The investigation focuses on socio-environmental conflicts associated with mining and gold prospecting in Indigenous territories, seeking to understand the material impacts of these activities and the political, symbolic, and cultural implications of the ways in which such childhoods are narrated and made visible. The research is grounded in the following analytical categories: (1) representation and regimes of visibility, examining how Indigenous children are discursively constructed in institutional and media arenas; (2) vulnerability and humanitarian framing, identifying the recurrent association between Indigenous childhood, harm, and crisis; and (3) territory, expropriation, and symbolic dispute, articulating territorial conflicts with disputes over meanings of development, responsibility, and future. In addition to bibliographical research, documentary and discursive analysis is conducted on institutional materials from Funai, the UN/UNICEF, and the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo. The analysis shows that Indigenous children predominantly appear associated with frames of vulnerability, risk, and suffering, with emphasis on contamination, malnutrition, and violence, and with less problematization of the economic, political, and colonial structures that produce them, consolidating a representational regime that highlights harm but tends to obscure the dynamics of territorial expropriation and state and corporate responsibilities. In critical dialogue with these representations, Amerindian conceptions of children and childhoods are mobilized through the analysis of podcasts, articles, reports, and documentaries produced in dialogue with the perspectives and knowledge of Indigenous women and mothers, showing that children are understood as a constitutive part of territories and as a horizon of cosmological continuity, shifting the narrative from isolated victimization to the defense of collective projects of life.
