SUMMARY:

This research addresses the Cururupu Marine Extractive Reserve, located in Maranhão, and is situated within an analysis of Protected Areas as socio-natural and historical constructs, characterized by their instability and permanent transformation, in contrast to normative approaches that tend to conceive them as predefined institutional arrangements. To this end, it draws on the ethnographic method combined with a processual perspective, focusing on the dynamics, tensions, and negotiations observed in co-management spaces. The creation of the Reserve was strongly influenced by forces and demands external to the constituent communities, in contrast to the formation trajectories of the first protected areas of this kind in the country. This dynamic directly affected the co-management arrangements and the forms of political participation and representation built over its trajectory. The research also examines the effects of the climate crisis on daily life, on the maritory, and on the forms of use and occupation by resident communities. Coastal erosion has caused displacement, loss of inhabited areas, and the disappearance of entire communities, without adequate legal recognition of the resulting impacts. In parallel, the extensive mangrove areas have been reframed as new frontiers for the financialization of nature through negotiations related to blue carbon generation, perceived by different actors as an alternative to address the recurrent and historical scarcity of public funds allocated to the Reserve. The analysis showed that, faced with the advance of the sea, the limitations of state action, and new disputes over the uses and meanings of nature, community leaders and their supporters carry out collective processes oriented by the continuous pursuit of community autonomy. Organized through the Association of Residents of the Cururupu Marine Extractive Reserve (AMREMC) and the Network of Coastal Women of the Cururupu Reserve (REMPREX), these mobilizations and forms of socio-environmental participation contest bureaucratic tutelage and claim autonomy as a condition for the permanence and reproduction of life in the maritory.
