SUMMARY:

Addressing the electoral behavior of family farmers in Western Santa Catarina, this doctoral research project aims to examine which values, shaped through their historical process of social formation and collective making as a social group, influence the voting decisions of a segment of family farmers in this region. The study is structured as follows. First, it defines the category of family farming relevant to the research by examining its historical formation within the broader process of settlement and regional development in Western Santa Catarina. Subsequently, drawing upon E. P. Thompson's theoretical perspective and the psychosocial model of electoral behavior, the study seeks to understand the elements that constitute individuals' belief systems and how these systems influence voting decisions.

Methodologically, the research combines documentary and bibliographical analysis to reconstruct the twentieth-century occupation of the region, as well as the forms of sociability and patterns of interaction between local populations and the state. In addition, electoral data from Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) are analyzed to examine electoral processes at both the state and regional levels and to identify how the population under study has participated in these processes. Furthermore, during the 2026 electoral period, the research intends to collect empirical data through surveys and in-depth interviews, complemented by the observation of campaign events and candidates' social media activities.

The study seeks to answer the following research question: which ethical, moral, ideological, social, economic, and political values shape the belief systems that mediate the voting decisions of the established family farming population in Western Santa Catarina? To address this question, the dissertation is organized into four chapters. Chapter 1 examines the process of settlement and occupation of Western Santa Catarina throughout the twentieth century, highlighting its distinctive characteristics and the social and political actors involved. Chapter 2 analyzes the main electoral outcomes in the state of Santa Catarina, relating them to political contests at the national, state, and local levels in order to understand the dynamics of electoral competition and the position of the region's inhabitants within these processes. Based on the fieldwork, the dissertation will further develop two additional topics: Chapter 3 discusses the political context and electoral climate preceding the 2026 elections, with particular emphasis on the study region; and Chapter 4 presents and analyzes the empirical data collected during the field research, seeking to identify the factors that shape the belief systems of family farmers in Western Santa Catarina and their influence on voting behavior.
