RESUMO:

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the conflicts over land, which involve forms of violence, under state seal, in the regions that compose Maranhão between 1940 and 1980, the period that runs through the coup (1964-1985), trying to understand their influence on the dynamics of these conflicts. As guiding questions of the research we adopted the following: What were the policies of control and domination undertaken to workers during this period? What meanings were attributed to violence by these social subjects? What were the forms of action and organization of the workers of the Maranhão countryside facing the policies of control and domination? The work, in progress, will be carried out in two stages, and is in the phase of quantitative survey of land conflict cases in all mesoregions of the state and record of their regularities and singularities. During the second stage data will be recovered beyond the documentary research, through life stories via oral history. The retrieval of memories, via oral history, plays an important role in our work in retrieving the references of something more specific that can lead us to subjective issues not reached with the analysis of documents.
