This research project aims to analyze the socioeconomic arrangements that support and configure the touristic activity in Morro de São Paulo and Garapuá, in Tinharé Island, Cairu (BA). As a social problem, tourism assumes special importance in this region, in a trajectory that has its origins in the 1990s, with the implementation of federal public policies, aimed at promoting touristic activities, especially the Tourism Development Program in the Northeast (PRODETUR- NE), influencing in different ways the socioeconomic and spatial dynamics of the studied locations. The present work seeks to contribute to an analysis of the touristic phenomenon in contemporary capitalism, understanding tourism as a multifaceted activity, which aims to provide the "consumption of places", fostering new issues regarding land tenure and use, enabling reflections on a “new Agrarian Question”. The methodological approach adopted by the work proposes a comparative approach involving case studies in two communities, selected because they present different trajectories with regard to the development of tourism activity. In Morro de São Paulo it is possible to find a touristic activity already consolidated, which attracted to the region a diversity of entrepreneurs, strongly impacting the dynamics of land use and appropriation of natural resources previously existing in this locality. In the case of Garapuá the presence of tourism is more recent. It’s possible to observe, however, a series of interfaces between the tourist phenomenon and land grabbing dynamics by speculators and / or entrepreneurs. The research should involve document analysis, semi-structured interviews and participant observation in the researched communities.
