SUMMARY

Creole seeds hold a polysemy of designations. They are called “natural”, “of the people”, “from generations”, among many other names. This polysemy is not only related to semantic variations or innovations, but reflects relationships and practices woven historically and developed by farmers, technicians, organizations and social movements. The weaving of these processes takes place, in general, in opposition to the seeds prescribed by the practices and values of conventional agriculture. The stories, actions and understandings associated with creole seeds indicate other forms of “being alive” (INGOLD, 2015), which take place through the continuous constitution of tasks among living beings of all kinds. These seed are treated in this work as living beings. Their materialities come into question as they act in the encounter with other actors. The possibilities of “being alive”revived by creole seeds combine complementarities between humans and non human beings and suggest the existence of other worlds, ontologies, beyond the one inscribed in conventional agriculture. The reference to ontologies comes, in this work, from Blaser (2019), involving three simultaneous arrangements i) the understandings of the world, assumptions that allow the existence of certain realities; ii) practices, which are established in the interactions between humans and non-humans; and iii) stories, histories or myths. The research context of this work is the Network of Seed Exchange (RIS), in its operation in the region of Sobral / CE. At RIS, farmers, agrarian reform settlers, quilombolas and organizations, such as Rural Workers' Unions (STTRs) and the Diocesan Caritas of Sobral, have constituted, especially through the Seed Houses, distinct collective storage strategies of creole seeds. The Houses, in turn, are configured as points of confluence of the multiple flows and materialities that circulate within the network. In these terms, the thesis proposes to investigate the ontologies of creole seeds, from the composition(s) of world(s) that emerge in the RIS Sobral. This research architecture reinforces that the existence of creole seeds goes beyond the spatiality of RIS, encompassing different scales and broad political processes. Thus, looking at the world (s) enacted by the creole seeds requires also political lenses, identifying what elements enable or not the existence of certain ontologies. Methodologically, this research draws on an ethnographic perspective, also making use of an effort of historical research and documentary analysis, recovering a process that has its roots in the 1970s. During field work, we seeked to share the network's daily life and understand how practices, stories and understandings of worlds are being woven, in the RIS interaction spaces, through the combination of human and non-human actors.
