SUMMARY:

The present work aims to identify the contributions of geography and social sciences to the debate about the brazilian rural reality. To achieve this goal, a systematic bibliographic review of the meanings attributed to the notion of rural is being carried out. As they are different fields of knowledge, it was necessary in the first chapter of this research to make a brief history of studies on the rural in these two fields, classic and contemporary authors from geography and the social sciences will be used. After this first stage, doctoral theses were selected from three graduate programs, two from geography (human Geography - USP and geography and territory management - UFU / federal university of Uberlândia) and one from social sciences (CPDA-UFRRJ) between the years 2000-2020. From the reading of these theses and the filling out of reading forms, it will be observed how the notion of rural is defined and operationalized. The objective is not to identify the best definition, but to try to understand what meanings are being attributed to the rural in these two fields in the last two decades and what are the main issues that have been raised in these studies, pointing to possible approximations or distinctions between the two.
