ABSTRACT

From the 1970s onwards, with the process of return of the Brazilian's democracy after the dictatorship, several rural and urban struggles, with different political, economic and social objectives, intensified. Therefore, new and old actors of the working classes mobilize strategies to transform their realities, as well as their unions, confederations and federations. In the sugarcane field, the Confederation of Rural Workers in Agriculture (CONTAG), together with the Unions of Rural Workers from different regions, directed the restructuring of the struggles, promoting the awareness of the classes, intensifying the legal processes and adhering to strikes and strikes as instruments of political pressure for the conquest of basic and fundamental rights. Important strikes for sugarcane workers emerged from this movement, such as the one that took place in Pernambuco (1979), Guariba (1984) and Campos dos Goytacazes (1984). This dissertation analyzes the campistas strike, ocurred in July 1984, lasting 36 hours, whose victories are similar to Guariba. Having the sugarcane workers as its main subjects, it is presented as the conditions of life and work in the moments of the strike, as articulations of the Union of Rural Workers of Campos (STRC) and its associates with the national union structure; the exchange of experiences and demands of other regions, fundamental to the emergence of the movement. The beginning, progress and end of the strike are understood, having as sources of research interviews, specialized bibliography and newspapers. As a result, it is shown that the movement was built months before, with advances and setbacks in negotiations with the employer class, whose intransigence of the mill owners led to the reaction of the workers. Furthermore, it is discussed how the camper sugarcane workers momentarily break with the unionism project organized by CONTAG, carrying out an illegal strike. The results also indicate the constant mobilization in the plants and farms, even after the victory of the movement, aiming to forcing the execution of the signed agreement. In this way, the study contributes to the field of mobilization of rural workers in the period of redemocratization, discussing the role, action and mobilization of sugarcane workers in Rio de Janeiro.
