SUMMARY:

The colonization policy has been continuously reconfigured in Brazilian history as a mechanism of state intervention oriented towards conflict management, control of land and populations and as a treatment of the agrarian question, articulated with the formation and expansion of land, labour and consumption markets. Colonization can be understood, in this way, as a long-term element in Brazilian politics, related to a techno-business-military complex and its positivistic and authoritarian tradition of understanding and intervention by the State in the social margins. To capture the interpretative framework of this policy and its implementation, I analyse the set of interventions and experiences of colonization in the municipality of Cachoeiras de Macacu (RJ), apprehending its realization from the conflicting dynamics between the techno-businessmilitary complex, different peasant groups and their associations and mediators. In this way, it is possible to apprehend the specific social configuration in which the colonization policy was triggered, especially in the early years of the business-military dictatorship, its causes, contradictions, and consequences, observing the persistence of its logic of action in contemporary forms of intervention by the State in the agrarian question.
