SUMMARY:

This research aims to contribute with the comprehension of the relationship between rural youth and the construction of Alternative Food Networks (AFN) via consumers and producers' initiatives. Based on available literature, it has been perceived several challenges for young people to stay in the rural area and to engage with the agricultural work, which are associated with processes of aging and “masculinização” of rural populations, and, furthermore, with the construction of new rural identities. At the same time, an increasing number of people, from urban or rural areas, are organizing themselves around different forms of direct food trade with family farmers. Such experiences are known as Alternative Food Networks (AFN), remarkable by its potential for transforming production, distribution and consumption of foodstuff, as well as the dynamics between urban and rural areas. These elements ask for an analysis on how AFN initiatives might have an effect on the life trajectories and perspectives of rural youth’s permanence on agricultural work and rural communities. Based on fieldwork conducted with youngsters that work at Glória Organic Fair, which are part of the Carioca Circuit of Organic Fairs (CCFO), it was sought to verify in which ways the relationship between rural youth and AFN has been formed.
