RESUMO:

The increasing globalization with a predominance of finances, which accelerated after 1970, introduced new relations and possibilities of financing agricultural production culminating in a growing process of financialization. In the most recent phases of this process, institutional investors, non-bankers and institutional investors who are companies, legal entities, investment funds, pension funds, insurance companies and venture capitalists, that have great strategic knowledge in the stock and capital market , which seek to invest in the long term and which carry large volumes of capital for each transaction. This intensification of the financial dimension of agricultural production in Brazil is one of the features of the recent period that Delgado (2012) called the Agribusiness Economy. This research project aims to understand the new disputes that are imposed on the Brazilian countryside in the present time, whose main feature is the substantial increase in the invested of the foreign financial capital allied to the great agroindustrial capital (national and international) in the expansion of Brazilian agribusiness. These disputes resulted of the transformations that the agricultural sector underwent in the country in the second half of the twentieth century which cause, not only a modification of a theoretical character, but also a transformation of an empirical character of the sector, its productive and social practices and its commercial relations with new players and new spaces. We will focus on the analysis of the Canadian investment fund Brookfield Asset Management Inc, considered one of the global leaders in alternative investments, and whose investments have in Brazil its main destination. We will try to apprehend how the fund operates in promoting the expansion of Brazilian agribusiness and, at the same time, understand the strategies that it mobilizes with a view to acquiring and controlling agricultural land in the country.
