ALMOST A ROUTE FOR AÏNOUZ: ORE-DEPENDENCE IN BRUMADINHO IN THE CONTEXT OF DISASTER-CRIME

In this research project, we intend to answer the question of whether mini-dependency has aggravated conflicts and damage in the affected municipality of Brumadinho. In line with this question, we have launched a hypothesis concerning the specific context in which the city was hit by the country's biggest crime-disaster. In this sense, our hypothesis is materialized by seeking to verify whether mini-dependency in the context of the disaster-crime has resulted in intensified damage to the economy, culture, the environment and health, destroying ways of life and altering the meaning of sociability in the municipality, and whether, as part of this process, the affected population has produced new identities and tools for struggle in the territory. In order to carry out this undertaking, we propose three central objectives for all of our research: i) to understand the economic and political motivations that led to the disaster-crime; ii) to understand what the damages are and how they are presented in the context of a territory affected and hegemonized by mining-dependence; iii) to verify whether those affected have built diverse identities and forms of struggle in the wake of the fight for full reparation; The methodology for fulfilling these objectives is related to qualitative and quantitative research, documentary analysis, a literature review and semi-structured interviews. The first chapter is divided into four sections. The first concerns the conceptual discussion of mini-dependence. The second section briefly presents the history of Vale S.A.. The next section deals with the economic and financial reasons that led the mining company to opt for the risk of a criminal disaster, followed by the last section, dealing with the political and institutional motivations that Vale S.A. benefited from in order to approve the operations relating to the Córrego do Feijão mine and dam in Brumadinho.
