RESUMO:

I took as object of study the case of the rural settlement Palmares II, located in the municipality of Parauapebas, southeast of Pará and region of Carajás. I tried to investigate the social effects on the settlement of agribusinesses, especially industrial mining. Demonstrating how the experience of agrarian reform in the Amazon is being marked by recent changes in the legal framework and how these transformations are reconfiguring traditional, peasant and environmental territorialities and temporalities. Focusing on the individual and collective experiences of the subjects living in Palmares II, I identified and reflected on the pressures derived, directly or indirectly, from the advance of the agro-mining businesses that now fall on the settlement. I believe that the examination of the case of Palmares II provided elements that contribute to reflect on the possibilities and limitations for the development of the rural settlements of the Brazilian Amazon in the current context of expansion of agro-mining businesses in the region
