SUMMARY:

The 1960s in Brazil, are marked by instability and political radicalization, the circumstance in which the agrarian question theme, especially agrarian reform, rural unionism, and peasant mobilizations stood out in the main debates and political disputes, bringing to the fore some of the antagonisms that boosted conservative reactions culminating in the 1964 civil-military coup. In this context, the Brazilian Catholic Church undertakes a reorientation of its praxis as a reflection of the changes that had been taking place in the church since the Vatican and as a result of an effort to deal, locally, with the institutional and religious crisis that had affected it. The Church's flexion materializes a strategy that aims to expand its influence radius by outlining a most active position in civil society and changing its socio-political role towards the state and its main political and ideological rivals, such as the ideas and the left political groups identified as the communist threat. The Church was facing with a context that was impelling episcopate segments to emphatically position themselves in the political and ideological space, which reflects the attention to the peasant's constitution as a class emerging in the national political scenario, in addition to a more elaborate definition of the agrarian issue. It was a matter of organizing a method to intervene in the rural areas as a way to fight communism advance, especially in a historical context marked by numerous peasant mobilizations throughout the national territory and the Latin American continent. The present research aims to understand the agrarian question place when the Catholic Church changes its influence strategy between the 1950s and 1960s, highlighting its relationship with the State and civil society, as well as the convergences and perspective conflicts that such a theme aroused between sectors of the Brazilian episcopate. Based on the intellectual activity conveyed by Church's hierarchy members on the Revista Eclesiástica Brasileira pages, between the years of 1959 and 1964, analyzing speeches, statements, pastoral letters, encyclicals, public statements which provide elements that help us to understand the political and ideological dimension of Church's modernization strategy and its higher insertion in society.
