SUMMARY:

Since 2007-08, when the effects and consequences of the multidimensional crisis of capitalism were felt globally (BORRAS Jr et al., 2014), many investors migrated to the already heated extractive sector (agriculture, energy and mineral), due to the so-called “boom” of international commodity prices, started in 2000 (MALUF; SPERANZA, 2013; LEITE; FLEXOR, 2017). This dynamic represented an abrupt adjustment in the global investment patterns that had and still has, as one of the central axes, the purchase / lease of land on a global scale (SASSEN, 2016), forming a phenomenon that was conventionally called Global Land Grabbing, Land Rush and, in the Brazilian context, “Estrangeirização” de Terras (FERNANDES, 2011; BORRAS; FRANCO, 2012; LEITE; SAUER, 2011; FAIRBAIRN, 2015). The magnitude of the investments led to the formation of a “global market for land” (and natural resources) (SASSEN, 2016) that has produced profound changes in the political economy of land and natural resources in the countries of the so-called Global South (MARTINS, 2019) , not only for reinforcing an international division of labor that has long worked out an agro-export and economically and politically dependent “destination” for many of these countries (SVAMPA, 2016), massively displacing the territorial dispute historically circumscribed to the national territory on a global scale ( BORRAS, et al., 2012). Brazil has been identified as the fifth global destination for this type of investment (LANDMATRIX, 2016). Faced with these issues and the complexity of the ongoing processes, the object of analysis of this thesis focuses on the functioning of the current global land market in Brazil, seeking to understand the way in which this market is structured, what are its main drives and the cooperation strategies (and conflicts) with local agro-exporting elites, using the region called MATOPIBA (acronym for the initials of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia) as a case study. The choice of this region is due to the fact that it is one of the epicenters of large investments by foreign companies, which have been implementing major projects based on the monoculture of soy, corn, cotton and sugar cane, as a priority, and also purely speculative investments that involve powerful financial market players. In addition, this area that has been of great interest to national elites and has been experiencing an accelerated territorial advance led by agribusiness and embodied yet another of the historical cycles of expansion of the agricultural frontier in the country.
