SUMMARY:

Nature Conservation Units have often been described as the main biodiversity conservation strategy in Brazil, where protection of the environment is established as a right "of all" and a "common good" for the population, current and future generations. The notion of Sovereignty and Food Security is related to strategies to realize the right of "everyone" to a regular and permanent access to food in sufficient quantity and quality, without compromising access to other essential needs. This research is located at the interface of these two major themes. If the Extractive Reserves are presented as a model of "sustainable use" of land and natural resources with the active participation of the communities, the central objective is to understand how Extractive Reserves have been articulated as a strategy to guarantee the right to adequate food and an ecologically balanced environment. At the same time, to evaluate if the strategies can be understood as biodiversity conservation and food security (common) rights instituent praxis.
