Nature and candomblé: an ebó of ideas to postpone the end of the world

SUMMARY:

This research argues that communities and adept of candomblé establish very particular
forms of relationship with the environment and natural resources, which reflect values,
knowledge and ways of life typical of this religious tradition. Although these
knowledges are discredited by modern social thought, we argue that such cosmologies
and practices comprise an epistemology proper to candomblé, which transcends the
field of religious rite and includes particular and effective notions of nature and the
environment to interpret certain environmental dilemmas of modernity. The main
objective of the research is to understand how its cosmologies and practices shape the
relationship of adepts with the environments and natural resources and how this can
contribute to problematize the conception of nature and the models of society involved
in modern social thought. From a theoretical-methodological point of view, we draw an
epistemological crossroads of scientific and native theories based on the ideas of
symmetrical anthropology by Bruno Latour, ecology of knowledge and epistemologies
of the south of Boaventura de Sousa Santos, and counter-hegemonic narratives to
postpone the end of the world by Ailton Krenak, to guide an ethnographic research and
a discussion about modernity and its environmental dilemmas in the face of the notions
of coloniality, racism and epistemicide of the peoples of the global south. Inspired by
the notion of ebó in candomblé as a powerful device for interacting with the world and
dynamizing life, the researcher been also candomblecist, this research is developed as
an ebó to be offered at this epistemological crossroads, as a contribution to the
construction of other notions of nature and relations with the environment. The thesis
would therefore be an ebó of ideas to postpone the end of the world.
