SUMMARY:

Praia Grande da Cajaíba is one of the many caiçara communities in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro. Inserted in an overlapping of conservation units, the community witnessed the exodus of its members, a consequence of an intense territorial conflict against the illegal acquisition of land by an alleged "owner", which resulted in a migratory movement of the population towards the urban outskirts of the city of Paraty. Of the more than twenty-five families that had residency in the community in the mid-2000s, only two resisted purchases of possessions and eviction strategies by the local grileiro. Today, we are witnessing attempts to return some individuals who formerly inhabited Praia Grande da Cajaíba, while discussions began on the creation of the State System of Conservation Units - SEUC - which would include, in its formulation, the creation of the Caiçara Ecological Cultural Reserve. The present research intends to identify the main actors and agents involved in the territorial dynamics that involve not only the traditional Caiçara community referred to here and the land-grabbing actors, but the conservation units, social movements and, to a large extent, tourism agents, which advances into traditionally occupied territories allied to real estate capital and its representatives. As a result, it is necessary to discuss the right that the caiçaras, as Traditional Peoples and Communities, have on their own autonomy and on the management of their territories; and the relationship of this right with nature conservation, the ultimate objective of conservation units.
