Research of Toxoplasma gondii in reproductive tissues, blood and serum of wild cats from Furtada Island, Rio de Janeiro.
felines, T. gondii, IHC, MAT, PCR
Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan. Cats are the definitive hosts. The main objective of this study is to investigate Toxoplasma gondii in reproductive tissues, blood and serum of feral cats. Samples of whole blood, serum and tissues of the reproductive tract of 56 free-ranging domestic cats from Ilha Furtada, Mangaratiba in the state of Rio de Janeiro will be used. Tissues of testes, uterus, ovaries, placenta and fetuses previously fixed in 10% formalin will be analyzed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The samples and records with the animals' data were provided by the Pathological Anatomy Sector (SAP) of the UFRRJ. Serological diagnosis for the detection of IgG anti-T. gondii will be performed by the Modified Agglutination Test (MAT). Reproductive tissues and blood will be analyzed by histopathology, immunohistochemistry and PCR for the identification of the parasite that will be carried out in the Pathological Anatomy Sector. This study is expected to identify the protozoan in tissues of the reproductive tract of cats and to assess the epidemiological impact of toxoplasmosis in the population studied. Thus, this study aims to provide new information about the action of the parasite in this region, contributing with new epidemiological and scientific data.
