SUMMARY:

Toxoplasmosis is caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular coccidia, considered a zoonosis of worldwide distribution and endemic here in Brazil, capable of infecting humans and other warm-blooded animals, with felids being the definitive hosts and contaminants of the environment. Dogs, humans and other warm-blooded animals are considered intermediate hosts. Epidemiological studies in dogs reveal that this etiological agent is widespread in the canine population, but the silent clinical manifestations, which are not recognized by clinicians, lead to a lack of diagnosis. This is because toxoplasmosis in dogs is an opportunistic infection and is usually concomitant with other pathologies, which makes diagnosis difficult. Blood donor dogs must be submitted to a screening of tests, making clinical and laboratory evaluation, to select the animals suitable for donation, being them free of some pathogens, among them the most important for the present study the etiological agent Toxoplasma gondii, which can generate symptoms similar to other diseases, which makes it underdiagnosed and disseminated worldwide. It is noteworthy that the detection of this agent is not used in the routine screening of these animals. The objective of this work is to detect T. gondii in the blood of donor dogs that undergo frequent tests in order to investigate whether the donor dog is a possible carrier of Toxoplasma gondii, as well as other possible diseases linked by blood, such as: Ehrlichia canis, Babesia canis and Dirofilaria immitis. Screening diseases to exclude selected donors, except for T. gondii. The first part of the research will be carried out at the blood collection site, which are kennels already registered in the blood bank, Hemoviate, located in the neighborhood of Pendotiba in the municipality of Niterói. Followed by the examination of other diseases (for screening) that will be performed at Hemoviate. The serological and molecular diagnosis of T. gondii will be carried out at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases at UFRRJ.
