RESUMO:
Toxoplasmosis is a cosmopolitan zoonosis caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii and transmitted by ingestion of oocysts present in the feces of infected cats, the definitive hosts of this parasite. When in the environment, these sporulated oocysts can reach the water from streams, lakes and wells destined for crop irrigation and water supply for human and animal consumption, and may be a source of infection for the population. In Brazil the prevalence in humans and animals is high, between 40% and 90% of pregnant women have the chronic form of the disease. Neosporosis is caused by the coccid Neospora caninum, which has the dog as its ultimate host. It is a disease widely studied in livestock such as cattle, goats and sheep, but little studied and almost unknown in domestic cats. Seroprevalence of T. gondii and N. caninum is related to low socioeconomic status and poor sanitary conditions. The objective of this study is to correlate risk factors, clinical and laboratory aspects that predispose infection in the feline population of Itaguaí microregion, to establish seroprevalence and associated risk factors in this population. The analyzes will be performed from 200 blood samples of cats from the Itaguaí microregion, treated at the feline sector of the Small Animal Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. The serology will be done at the Laboratory of Coccidia and Coccidioses (LCC) of UFRRJ, through Indirect Immunofluorescence (RIFI). Feline blood serum samples will be analyzed at UFRRJ Clinical Pathology Laboratory for serum enzyme activity: Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Alanine aminotranaferase (ALT), Gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), Creatine Phosphorus Kinase (CPK) and Phosphatase Alkaline (AF), in addition to total Protein (PT), Albumin, Urea and Creatinine concentrations. To quantitatively compare the population of positive animals with the associated risk factors, the chi-square test will be used. This study is expected to bring contributions to the epidemiological aspects of both parasites in the region studied, as well as to provide valuable information on feline clinical routine.
