SUMMARY:

Nephrolithiasis is a condition frequently seen in feline species, with or without chronic kidney disease, constituting the major cause of ureteral obstruction as well as progressive lesions to the renal parenchyma. Such nephrolites can form as a result of several factors that result in the precipitation of lithogenic ions. It is known that about 90% of nephrolites are composed of calcium oxalate, and that these are not capable of dissolution and that their incidence has increased substantially in recent years, together with recurrence. It is not yet known for sure, what is the correlation between nephrolithiasis and chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, the presence of one may be a predisposing factor for the development of the other and the early diagnosis of both is of paramount importance in therapeutic management. There are functional foods, known as nutraceuticals, that provide health benefits and among these, we can mention polyunsaturated fatty acids, proteins, peptides, amino acids / keto acids, minerals and vitamins.

Due to these benefits and the prevalence of nephrolithiasis in feline species, the present study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of the association of some of these nutraceuticals (eicosapentaenoic acid - EPA; docosahexaenoic acid - DHA; resveratrol; chelated magnesium and menaquinone) in the dissolution of nephrolites in felines. To this end, after approval by the Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals of the Veterinary Institute of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (CEUA / IV / UFRRJ) and consent of the tutors, 45 cats with a confirmed diagnosis of nephrolithiasis were divided into two groups Group Control (12 animals) and Study Group (33 animals). Inclusion in each group was done in a simple random way using a free number sorting program, in which the Study Group received even numbers and the Control Group odd numbers. The animals of the Control Group received a placebo (1 capsule / SID / 30 days / with food) and that of the Study Group the nutraceutical formulation (1 capsule / SID / 90 days / with food). Every 30 days, patients were evaluated using laboratory tests: blood count, urine and serum biochemistry (urea, creatinine and magnesium) and imaging (abdominal ultrasound) to monitor therapy. Regarding the results obtained, it can be seen that the number of females (66.6%) was higher than males (33.3%). The age group between 11 and 15 years old had a higher prevalence of the condition 38% (17/45). Mixed-breed cats outperformed all other breeds with 96.9% (44/45). In the assessment of the body condition score (ECC), 60% (27/45) of the cats were within the ideal weight at the time of diagnosis. As for the presence of crystalluria, only 9% (3/45) of the cats had a predominance of CaC2O4. Regarding intestinal health, only 3% (1/45) had inflammatory bowel disease. The stipulated time of use of nutraceuticals has shown to have no negative influence on the clinic and / or laboratory tests during the entire treatment period.
