Identification of Pentatrichomonas hominis in naturally infected zebu cattle
Cattle, Parabasalid, buul, cow
In Brazil, few studies have been conducted with the purpose of correctly diagnosing the species that can parasitize domestic animals and their interactions with the host. This project is the first in the country that proposes to identify this protozoan in the reproductive tract of the bovine species. Thus, this project has unique importance because it is an unprecedented study in the country whose objective is to identify the presence of P. hominis in preputial lavage and vaginal mucus of zebu cattle and correlate this finding with reproductive indices of a herd. Given the above, this thesis project was structured in four parts, the first being a literature review with the objective of supporting the methodology used in the experiments, addressing the importance of the subject and promoting the discussion of the results of the following chapters. The second part (Chapter I), whose focus was to identify the presence of Pentatrichmonas hominis in preputial washes and vaginal mucus of bovines through the technique of cultivation and polymerase chain reaction. The third part (Chapter II) is an experiment whose main objective is to compare two techniques for collecting material in the reproductive tract and to assess whether the collection technique influences the laboratory diagnosis, in this part we will use two ways of collecting vaginal mucus and we will compare its effectiveness. The fourth and last part, whose objective is to correlate the presence of Pentatrichomonas hominis to reproductive indices of a property, will be performed using Pearson's correlation.
