SUMMARY:

The number of agricultural establishments focused on equine reproduction has increased significantly in recent years, placing Brazil in the position of number one country in Embryo Transfer (ET) programs. In order to reduce the rates of embryonic losses, it is necessary to search for new treatments for routine diseases directly linked to the reproductive tract in horses. Endometritis is the main disease that affects the reproductive tract of mares, leading to subfertility and is the third disease that most affects horses in the world. In general, susceptible mares have common characteristics, such as advanced age, a history of reproductive failure in several seasons, a history of previous episodes of endometritis and a history of miscarriages. Research shows that the age of the mare affects the physical interactions between embryo and uterus, impacting pregnancy and embryonic losses. However, studies have not yet been performed to determine whether the age of the mare is related to greater susceptibility to endometritis. Thus, the hypothesis of the present study is that young (< 4 years) and virgin mares are more resistant to endometritis. In this context, this study aims to qualitatively and comparatively characterize the microorganisms found in the endometrium of mares of different ages. To achieve this objective, intrauterine material will be collected from 45 healthy mares and subjected to cytological analysis as well as fungal and bacterial culture. The animals selected for this study will be divided into three age groups: G1 (n = 15) - Group of virgin mares aged between 2 and 4 years; G2 (n = 15) - Group of mares in reproductive age between 5 and 10 years old; and G3 (n = 15) - Group of mares in reproductive age between 11 and 18 years. The mares will be submitted to ultrasound evaluation to monitor the estrous cycle and, when they present a follicle with a diameter greater than 35 mm and grade 3 uterine edema (scale 1 to 4), intrauterine material will be collected. After cleaning the perineal region with water and neutral soap, uterine samples will be collected using a swab and sterile cytological brush for fungal/bacterial isolation and evaluation of the percentage of neutrophils, respectively. Statistical analysis will be performed using the Analysis of Variance test (ANOVA), complemented by Tukey's and Dunnettou's tests, and the Kruskall-Wallis test, when recommended.
