SUMMARY:
Equine Piroplasmosis (EP) is a disease transmitted by ticks, affecting horses in several regions of the world, especially in those with subtropical and tropical climates, where the vectors are endemic. They are caused by the obligate intraerythrocyte protozoa Babesia caballi and Theileria equi, both can manifest as subclinical or acute conditions with nonspecific symptoms, causing febrile illness and hemolytic anemia. Prevention of the disease is based on the control of ticks and babesicidal drugs. In this study, we sought to evaluate the efficacy of this prophylaxis in preventing the re-exacerbation of the infection, especially of Theileria equi.
