SUMMARY:

Infection with the feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is still very common in feline clinics and, when it occurs progressively, it has serious clinical manifestations that in the vast majority of cases culminate in the death of patients. Until now proven effective treatments against FeLV have not been clarified, and they are only symptomatic. After in vitro studies and some in vivo reports, raltegravir, an antiretroviral medication, an integrase inhibitor, appears promising in the treatment of infection due to the high degree of conservation of active integrase sites present in many retroviruses. The objective of the present work is to enable an effective and safe treatment against FeLV, evaluating its efficacy in suppressing virus replication by analyzing the number of viral copies of proviral DNA and viral RNA sufficient to make patients carriers of the virus. progressive to regressive infection. Patients with progressive infection will be randomly divided into a control group and a treated group. The treated group will receive raltegravir at a dose of 40mg every 12 hours and both groups will be monitored for clinical evolution and laboratory tests, where blood samples will be collected for examination. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), qPCR with reverse transcriptase in real time (RT-qPCR), blood count with platelet count, urea, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total proteins, albumin and globulin, every 5 weeks, for a total of 10 weeks.
