RESUMO:

Summary

Rabies is an infectious disease that affects the nervous system of mammals. A Lyssavirus is the causative agent of Rabies. The disease is among the main diseases diagnosed in cattle in different surveys of cattle diseases in Brazil. As rabies affects humans it appears to represents major importance in public health. The rabies distribution is worldwide. In Brazil, the disease is endemic and has particular conditions varing on ecosystems, thus justifying the dynamics of the disease in each geographic region of the country. Losses in the national cattle herd due to the death of cattle are wide. Bovine herd in Brazil is increasing and importance of studies on the diagnosis of rabies continues to be necessary. Rabies seems to be clinically similar of other central nervous system diseases in cattle, thus justifies studies regarding improvement in diagnosis of herd health, as an immunohistochemistry (IHC) exam. IHC has been shown to be effective in recent studies, which point out as an alternative technique for diagnosis in cases of formalin-fixed samples. This project aims to conduct a retrospective study of the cattle in the departments of Pathological Anatomy (SAP) of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) from 1953 to 2018. With the objective of assemble epidemiological and clinic-pathological data; will be used necropsy data reports, in which data such as history, description of the lesion and complementary exams. In addition, slides of cattle nervous systems will be histologically reevaluated by Hematoxylin and Eosin stain and immunohistochemistry technique will be performed using a primary polyclonal antibody (Chemicon # 5199). Positive control will be used as samples of bovine central nervous system rabies encephalitis confirmed by direct immunofluorescence, intracerebral inoculation in mice and the IHC.
