RESUMO:
Equine endometritis, inflammation of the inner layer of the uterus, is described as a major cause of infertility in mares. Pathogenic microorganisms that cause endometritis are commonly of bacterial origin, and beta-hemolytic streptococci are often isolated. Several studies report that Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus is the most prevalent agent in equine endometritis. However, local studies from the State of Rio de Janeiro did not identify or corroborate this information. The aim of this study will be to identify the species and subspecies of Streptococcus sp. most frequent in endometritis in mares in the metropolitan mesoregion of Rio de Janeiro, in the city of Seropédica, RJ, Brazil. For this, 40 mares diagnosed with endometritis by ultrasound, culture and endometrial cytological examination will be used, until 30 samples of Streptococcus sp. Repeat mares will have samples collected again. These samples will be obtained in conjunction with another research project whose protocol CEUA is No. 3005021017. The samples recognized as Streptococcus sp. (n = 30) will be tested for sugar fermentation, for differentiation of species and subspecies found. Sugar fermentation tests will use lactose, trehalose, sorbitol and ribose. Positive cultures will be correlated to the cytology results of the corresponding mares. Data will be grouped and submitted to Kappa test, for cytology and culture results, and analysis with chi-square test, using 5% significance.
