SUMMARY:

Leishmaniasis is among the most prevalent and neglected endemic diseases worldwide. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an infectious, zoonotic disease caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum, a mandatory intracellular parasite of the cells of the mononuclear phagocytic system of vertebrate hosts. In vertebrate hosts, when infected, the amastigote form of the parasite prevails, and in phlebotomine, vectors, the promastigote. The transmission of the parasite to humans and animals occurs primarily through the bite of infected female sandflies, popularly known as “drain flies”. In Brazil, the most important species in transmission is Lutzomyia longipalpis, and in some foci other species have been accusable as vectors, including L. cruzi and L. migonei. It is currently present throughout Brazil. Dogs represent an important domestic reservoir for the etiologic agent Leishmania infantum. Brazil, compared to Central and all South America, is the country that registers the highest number of Visceral Leishmaniasis in the world. Of the 27 states, 24 register the presence of the transmitting sand fly, adapted to private residences and multi-unit dwellings, whether in urban or rural areas (DANTAS TORRES et al., 2020). The main vector in Brazil is the species Lutzomyia longipalpis. Females are hematophagous and feed on the blood of dogs, thus the association between infected dogs and increased infection in humans. The Southeast region of Brazil, the municipality of Volta Redonda, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, has been registering cases of canine visceral leishmaniasis for some years, followed by human cases also reported. Leishmaniasis are diseases of great importance in public health. The general objective of this study was to survey the frequency of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) at the Zoonosis Control Center (CCZ) in the municipality of Volta Redonda (VR), in the state of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), in the period from January, 2016 to December, 2020. A detailed survey was conducted, along with analysis of 970 records of all animals treated during that period of 5 years, in order to assess the percentage of animals testing positive, the increase in search for care and information by animals’ owners, increased infection by Leishmania in the municipality of Volta Redonda, and correlate with numerous environmental factors, clinical findings of these animals and variables associated to this infection. All animals were charted with all individual characteristics and data from their owners. All treated animals completed the TR DPP screening test and if the result was positive or inconclusive, a blood sample was sent to the LACEN laboratory for the ELISA confirmatory serological test. All the animal's characteristics were noted on the form and were later correlated with one other.
