RESUMO:

The routine in the pet clinic has been attentive to other infectious diseases with symptoms similar to Neospora caninum natural infection, however, paying little attention to neosporosis as an emerging disease that can be lethal to companion dogs. For that, was used the medical records of 201 dogs, attended at the Animal Health Center located at the Municipality of Teresópolis, a mountain region in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The ELISA test was used to determine which animals were serorreagent to N. caninum. Based on this cross-sectional study, the following results were obtained. The percentage found in the mountainous region was 39.80% of serorreagent animals to N. caninum which resembles animals of rural origin. Most of the animals examined were characterized as SRD (undefined breed), where the percentage of serorreagent was higher (p=0.0461) than observed in CRD (defined breed), thus indicating the importance of they come from urban areas with rural characteristics in the Municipality of Teresópolis in which one way or another can be made up of adoption dogs. Regardless of the examined animal breeds, the most important clinical complaints were muscular atrophy (p = 0.0311) and clinical signs of neurological impairment (p <0.0001) in serorreagent dogs. Among the examined and seroreactive animals to N. caninum, the clinical signs of ocular lesions were consisted of myositis (p <0.0001) with elevated intraocular pressure (p = 0.0001), cataract (p = 0.0369) and lens luxation ( p = 0.0272) which were considered as a characteristic sign of infection associated with canine neosporosis in the present study. The age between 1 and ≥12 years old (p = 0.0444) was important because they were adults and was included a larger number of serorreagent animals to this coccidia. However, the median hematological values cannot be considered as determinants in the clinical diagnosis of natural N. caninum infection in dogs treated in Teresópolis, since the chance of observing the natural infection concomitant with Ehrlichia. canis is highly significant (p = 0.0009) which determines that a clinical examination was done to separate the two infections in the routine clinical or even ophthalmologic examination.
