SUMMARY:

The Atlantic Forest is a highly biodiverse region that encompasses parts of
Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. Unfortunately, anthropic actions, such as deforestation
and indirect climate change, have caused a significant impact, resulting in the
destruction of habitats and affecting the ecological balance. This can lead to increased
populations of mosquitoes, including Culicidae, which act as vectors for diseases such
as Yellow Fever, Zika and chikungunya. When human activities invade mosquitoes'
natural habitats, favorable conditions are created for their reproduction and survival,
since some taxa have the capacity to adapt to different breeding sites, increasing the risk
of arbovirus transmission. In addition, deforestation and habitat fragmentation can
displace animal species that act as natural predators or competitors to mosquitoes, in
addition to reducing the availability of their food source. This disruption in the
ecosystem can create an imbalance, in which mosquito populations thrive without
natural checks and balances.
Periodic eco-epidemiological analyses, which investigate the behavior of mosquitoes in
areas of natural environment, may reveal still unknown habits of these vectors. The
Atlantic Forest, due to its rich diversity of flora and fauna of vertebrates and
invertebrates, offers a wide variety of niches conducive to the development of
Culicidae, making these analyzes particularly relevant. Therefore, the present study
aimed to analyze the diversity of Culicidae and detect the circulation of arboviruses in
different remnant fragments of the Atlantic Forest in the municipality of Casimiro de
Abreu (Fazenda Três Montes), Silva Jardim (Sitio Terra Boa) and Cachoeiras de
Macacú (Reserva Ecológica do Rio Guapiaçú), state of Rio de Janeiro, and to assess the
risk of emergence and transmission of arboviruses. The study had the collections carried
out between the years 2018 to 2023 using ovitraps, entomological ladle and manual
suction siphon, being carried out analyzes of ecological indices, influence of climatic
factors on the abundance of Culicidae and evaluate the potential risk of arbovirus
transmission through the extraction of viral RNA.
