SUMMARY:

The genus Hebrus Curtis, 1833, belonging to the family Hebridae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Gerromorpha), comprises over 220 species distributed across two subfamilies and 12 genera. These bugs are known as small semiaquatic insects, measuring between 1.3 and 3.7 mm in length, covered with setae, and featuring long antennae characterized by the fourth antennal segment superficially divided by a constriction. Globally, more than 180 species of Hebrus are known. In the Neotropical region, knowledge about Hebrus fauna is scarce due to their rarity in collections and study difficulties, with many taxa known only from the type series and described without illustrations or based solely on female specimens. Representatives of this genus typically inhabit marginal vegetation of ponds, streams, mangroves, and floating vegetation and are also captured in light traps. The present study provides a taxonomic revision of the species of this genus occurring in the Neotropical region, emphasizing the location of type material and additional specimens whenever possible. All studied species were photographed and examined to standardize the external morphological study of the genus. Following the examination of type specimens, 30 species were redescribed, and two new synonymies were proposed (junior synonyms in parentheses): Hebrus bilineatus Champion, 1898; H. camposi Drake & Chapman, 1954; H. comatus Drake & Harris, 1943; H. catus Drake & Chapman, 1958 (= H. elimatus Drake & Cobben, 1960); H. concinnus Uhler, 1894; H. consolidus Uhler, 1894; H. ecuadoris Drake & Harris, 1943; H. engaeus Drake & Chapman, 1958; H. gloriosus Drake & Harris, 1943; H. hirsutus Champion, 1898; H. hungerfordi Drake & Harris, 1943; H. lacunatus Drake & Chapman, 1958; H. laeviventris Champion, 1898; H. major Champion, 1898; H. nubilus Drake & Harris, 1943; H. parvulus Stål, 1860; H. paulus Drake & Harris, 1943; H. pilosidorsus Polhemus & Chapman, 1970; H. plaumanni Porter, 1952 (= H. limnaeus Drake & Chapman, 1958); H. priscus Drake & Harris, 1943; H. pudoris Drake & Harris, 1943; H. sobrinus Uhler, 1877; H. spiculus Polhemus & McKinnon, 1983; H. sulcatus Champion, 1898; H. usingeri Drake & Harris, 1943. Additionally, 12 new species were described for Brazil and one for Argentina, along with new records for the Neotropical region. This study is relevant for expanding knowledge on the biodiversity of Hebridae in the Neotropical region, contributing to the taxonomy and geographic distribution of these semiaquatic bugs, providing important photographic records and updated distribution maps, highlighting new occurrence areas, and enhancing the understanding of the group's diversity and biogeography.
