SUMMARY:

The morphology of the brachial plexuses is closely related not only to the movement of the forelimbs but also to the locomotion of the living beings that possess them. Its comparative study provides information that allows understanding how individuals of different species can interact within their group or with the environment in which they live (natural or captive). The objective of this research was to describe and compare the origins and antimeric distributions of the nerves of the brachial plexus in three groups of species of lion tamarins of the genus Leontopithecus, as well as the innervated muscles and skeletopy of cervical swellings. Thirty-two male lion tamarin specimens of the genus Leontopithecus (L. rosalia, L. chrysomelas and L. chrysopygus) were used, from the Non-Human Primates Creation Service of the Primatology Center with different histories of deaths and donated to the Laboratory of Teaching and Research in Morphology of Domestic and Wild Animals (LEPMADS) of the Department of Animal and Human Anatomy of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. Specimens were fixed with perfusion of 10% formaldehyde solution. The information found was represented by absolute frequencies and simple percentages. The ventral branches are composed of three nervous trunks and two fascicles: cranial, middle and caudal trunks; dorsal and ventral fascicles. The right and left brachial plexuses were derived from the ventral spinal branches C5, C6, C7, C8 and T1 with different frequencies in their arrangements in the three studied groups. L. rosalia, in L.chrysomelas and L. chrysopygus presented the arrangements in both antimers: C5, C5-C6, C5-C6-C7, C6-C7, C6-C7-C8-T1, C7-C8-T1 and C8-T1, contributing to the formation of the suprascapular, subscapular, radial, axillary, median, ulnar, musculocutaneous, cranial pectoral, caudal pectoral, lateral thoracic, long thoracic, thoracodorsal, forearm fascia fascia, medial forearm cutaneous, cutaneous nerves medial arm and subclavius. The muscles innervated by the nerve segments from the brachial plexus trunks were, respectively: mm. supraspinatus and infraspinatus; mm. teres major and subscapular; mm. brachial triceps, forearm fascia tensor, brachioradialis, extensors (carpus, digitalis and index); mm. teres minor and deltoid, mm. forearm flexors, pronator, palmar; carpal, thumb and digital flexors; mm. carpal flexors; mm. coracobrachialis, biceps brachii and brachialis; m. superficial pectoral; m. deep pectoral; m. latissimus dorsi; m. ventral thoracic serratus; m. latissimus dorsi; m. forearm fascia tensor; medial cutaneous region of the forearm; medial cutaneous region of the arm; m. subclavius.
