RESUMO:

Despite being a very heterogeneous family, canids can be commonly separated into two distinct types: dogs, wolves and jackals and foxes and foxes. They are important species in the modulation of the structuring of biological communities and often found in breeding grounds and zoos. Although not currently on the list of threatened animals, the reduction of certain populations by anthropic actions may represent an imbalance in the
ecosystem. Thus, knowing that morphological studies can contribute to the understanding of the behavior of individuals in free and captive life, the present study aims to characterize the penis morphology of C. thous and L. gymnocercus, so as to contribute with information that can help the implementation of captive management
and reproduction programs aiming at the conservation of the welfare of these species, besides contributing to the field of comparative animal morphology. Fourteen male and adult cadavers (seven C. thous and seven L. gymnocercus) were used. The animals were positioned in the right lateral decubitus position and their chest wall was dissected until the ribs were exposed. With the help of a costotome, the ribs were removed allowing
access to the thoracic aorta, which was duly cannulated with size 6 urethral catheter, which allowed the vascular system to be washed with 0.9% NaCl solution followed by fixation by 10% formaldehyde. After the fixation period, the animals were dissected and the anatomical regions, as well as the penis static structures of both species were
recorded and identified. For macroscopic characterization, two penises of each animal were cut transversely in different regions and examined under the stereoscopic microscope. The remaining 10 penis (5 of each species) underwent routine histological processing for paraffin embedding. From each sample were made five cuts with 5
micrometres thick each, for each type of staining, allowing the characterization of the extracellular matrix elements. Hematoxylin-eosin staining for verification of tissue integrity; Mallory trichrome for connective and muscle tissue differentiation; orcein with previous oxidation for elastic system fibers; Picrosirius red for collagen staining. The immunohistochemical technique with alpha actin antibody was performed for the labeling of muscle cells. The partial results of the histochemical and immunohistochemical analysis of the C. thous penis revealed a fibroelastic histoarchitecture, contrary to the current literature for carnivores. The root, body and glans were identified as the anatomical regions of this animal's penis, as already described in other mammals. The disposition of the corpora cavernosa, spongy body and urethra was also documented, being similar to those described for the domestic dog. Clusters of adipocytes, vessels, and connective tissue in the cavernous spaces were also found, resembling descriptions in domestic carnivores.
