TITLE:

Contamination of litter, microplastic and chemicals in the marine environment

KEY WORDS:

sampling precision, contaminants, marine organisms

PAGES: 75
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Zoologia
SUBÁREA: Zoologia Aplicada
SUMMARY:

Each year, the impacts caused by anthropological disturbances on the environment increase.
The disturbances are caused by the intense manufacture and consumption of synthetic
products (plastics), chemical compounds (pesticides), mining and environmental accidents
with pollutants. Moreover, inadequate solid waste management, demographic, industrial and
tourist growth, lack of public sanitation policies, result in favourable scenarios for
environmental contamination, especially in marine environments. Coastal areas have dense
population density, marinas, ports, sewage channels and intense tourist activity, which
aggravates contamination by macro and micro-debris and chemical compounds. These
contaminants interact with the biota, where different groups of organisms are physiologically
impacted. About this topic, there are diverse methodologies applied to the debris and
microplastics (MPs) studies. Regarding litter, many methodologies are biased, and
consequently, the analyses and results are inaccurate. As a result, Chapter I of this work
explores the use of different sizes and numbers of sample units (transects or quadracts) and
the impact of these analyses on sample precision. The choice and definition of the sample
design directly reflect the precision of the debris sampling. This study is a base for future
studies on the topic and the consequent production of more precise studies and analyses, not
only applicable to debris, but also for MPs. Still, as regards methods, Chapter II describes
methodologies applied to the study of microplastics in crustaceans, being support for works
involving MPs contamination in invertebrates, since it presents criticisms and limitations of
the methods used so far. Finally, as a case study, Chapter III analyses the direct
contamination of MPs in different benthic organisms of the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
Contamination was analysed in algae, sponges, and sea squirts. Additionally, there was a
correlation of this microplastic contamination with a group of associated organisms, the
amphipods.
